JOB SUMMARY:

The Chief of Police (COP) for the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Department will be responsible for the operation and administration of the Department, and day to day supervision of those employees assigned including certified tribal police officers, dispatchers, and administrative staff. This is a supervisory position. This position requires an 18-month probationary period before their appointment becomes final. If the employee does not satisfactorily complete the probationary period, they may be appointed to a lower grade/non-supervisory position if minimum qualifications are met, and if available. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises and assists in the investigation of violations of Tribal Ordinances, California Fish and Game Codes, Code of Federal Regulations, and other state and local statues on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation, in which tribal police have authority to enforce.
  • Serves as a Supervisory Police Officer, exercising technical and administrative supervision to subordinate police officers. In addition to supervisory skills, the employee employs knowledge of procedures and practices within the framework of established law enforcement guidance.
  • Responsible for the operation of a law enforcement program that includes the inspection of vehicles, equipment, uniforms, and attire of staff.
  • Plans work schedules and the sequence of patrol operations on a weekly, monthly, or project to project basis to assure an even flow and distribution of work, the expeditious handling of priority cases, and the meeting of schedules and deadlines.
  • Supervises the investigation of offenses, and may collect and preserve evidence, issue citations, confiscate fishing gear (i.e., nets, boats, fish caught or possessed in violation of regulations).
  • Arrests violators of the law or regulations as required, in which tribal police have authority to enforce.
  • Serves individuals with warrants issued by a competent authority.
  • Analyzes specific evidence of facts and prepares reports that accurately portray situations to the court of jurisdiction or to a higher echelon of authority.
  • Testifies in court when required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduated with an Associate’s Degree, in Police Science, Criminal Justice, or related field i.e. Public Safety, Police Science.
  • Achieved the level of Police Lieutenant or higher in a similar sized or larger Police Department and maintained that level for a minimum of three years.
  • Seven years of consecutive law enforcement service.
  • Must pass a full law enforcement background investigation in compliance with California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST). No Felony or Domestic Violence Convictions.
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered for this position.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Preferred graduate of a Bachelor’s Degree, in Police Science, Criminal Justice, or related field i.e. Public Safety, Police Science.
